Mission and vision

The foundation of the Centre for Advanced Materials Application of the SAS, v. v. i. (CEMEA) was initiated by the submitted project Building-up Centre of Excellence for advanced materials application, CEMEA No. 664337 under the H2020 WIDESPREAD-1-2014-Teaming programme, which was awarded the Seal of Excellence and recommended for national funding. The Centre was founded on the basis of a resolution of the Presidium of the SAS on June 1, 2017.

At the time of the CEMEA project, the Centre’s object of activity was research in the field of materials research and new technologies with a focus on surface and interface modification in the areas of advanced (nano)materials, sustainable energy and biomedicine. During the implementation of the CEMEA project (2019-2023), CEMEA SAV, v.v.i. has achieved significant scientific progress and has profiled itself in particular in the field of battery research and development, in the field of biomedicine (development of new bio(nano)materials) and nano-materials.

Battery research is one of the most important areas of science and development today, with the potential to have a major impact on energy, transport and many other sectors. Similarly, in the field of biomedicine, targeted drug application is one of the main directions where nanotechnologies can make a revolutionary contribution to more effective treatment of various diseases, including cancer. The development of resorbable bio-materials based on metals such as zinc or magnesium is also expected to be of great societal importance.

The main research areas include:

  • Advanced materials for energy harvesting and storage (photovoltaic cells, batteries)
  • Bio-nano-materials for biomedical applications
  • Thin films and surface properties
  • Functional polymer surfaces
  • Special lightweight structural materials and composites
  • Advanced ceramic materials
  • Inorganic and organic nanostructures for electronics and sensors
