Our history

The Centre for the Advanced Materials Application of the SAS, v.v.i. (CEMEA SAV) was founded on the basis of a resolution of the Presidium of the SAS on June 1, 2017 and from this point of view it is one of the youngest institutions within the SAS. The creation of CEMEA SAV was prompted by the submission of the H2020 WIDESPREAD-1-2014-Teaming project, which was awarded the Seal of Excellence and recommended for national funding.

The CEMEA project was authored by a group of scientists from six different SAV institutions (FÚ SAV, ÚACH SAV, UMMS SAV, ElÚ SAV, ÚPo SAV, BMC SAV). The first director of CEMEA SAV became RNDr. Eva Majková, DrSc., who, together with other members of the project consortium, started to work on building an institution with a multidisciplinary research focus (thin films and surface properties, functional polymer surfaces, special lightweight structural materials and composites, advanced ceramic materials, inorganic and organic nanostructures for electronics and sensors, and advanced materials for biomedicine and biotechnology). The project clearly defined a long-term development and action plan, which aimed to stimulate multi- and interdisciplinary research and to motivate deeper collaboration between the project partners.

The CEMEA project brought the necessary amount of financial resources to ensure human resources, quality of scientific outputs, efficient management and scientific infrastructure. All this under a clearly defined system of leadership and coordination of the six partner institutions within the project.

During the project implementation (2019-2023), CEMEA SAV has made significant progress, in particular in the field of battery development as well as in the development of new biomaterials and advanced materials.
